Organisations that rely on AI tools built using biased datasets or copyrighted materials, could fall foul of the EU AI Act, resulting in legal and reputational damage.
Even if you've banned AI tools like Chat GPT, Gemini, Llama or Claude from your workplace, this doesn’t mean your company is not using AI.
Unless you're building all your SaaS and other tech tools in-house (highly unlikely), then you may be using/will soon be using, AI-embedded tech systems provided by third-party suppliers.
Amongst other things, organisations that rely on AI tools built using biased datasets or copyrighted materials, could fall foul of the EU AI Act, resulting in legal and reputational damage. [Between 2024 - 2026, multiple provisions of this regulation will enter into force progressively]
So, whether building or buying, to avoid reinforcing existing inequalities, organisations can mitigate biases in their AI systems by following these steps:
Working with suppliers who build AI systems using inclusive, unbiased datasets.
Working closely with your HR/DEI colleagues to ensure you are asking your supplier(s) the right questions.
Ensuring proprietary datasets represent the true face and thoughts of the organisation as a whole.
Prioritising diversity in teams of developers and AI expert(s).
Regularly monitoring/auditing AI models and responses, a failure of which could return incorrect or inappropriate responses which in turn, erodes trust in the systems used.
By taking these steps, organisations can mitigate bias in their AI systems, create a culture of inclusion, while building stakeholder trust in their AI systems.
