Navigating AI Challenges in 2025: The Power of Emotionally Intelligent Leadership

ree

With geo-political tensions and economic storms brewing and concerns about AI amplifying, now is a crucial time for leaders & those in succession, to use Emotional Intelligence (EQ) to effectively navigate disruptions, challenges and uncertainties that lie ahead.

In addition to geopolitical headwinds, AI is now starting to play an increasing role in our personal lives as well as workplaces and challenges that await AI in 2025 include (although not limited to):

1.         AI bias the result of using limited datasets.

2.         AI hallucinations which stubbornly refuse to disappear.

3.         Questions over AI Scaling laws. These assume that AI models will continue to improve with more training data and great computing power. However, some AI orgs are experiencing diminishing returns from costly efforts to develop more advanced AI models. A large contributory factor to ‘AI scaling Laws’ include the now limited supply of human created data (text, videos, audio, books, research papers).

4.         Cyber security concerns - According to Stanford university, 88% of data breaches are caused by human error and yet according to the World Economic Forum (WEF, 15 Nov 2024), Emotional Intelligence (EQ), is the best defence against GENAI threats.

5.         Ethical – AI companies often seem to be prioritising efficiency over: ethics, copyright infringements, bias, and the wellbeing of annotators who are often in emerging markets with little to no union representation.

6.         Job Displacements - Concerns over jobs losses as a result of AI, are mounting

7.         Social concerns - Problematic uses of AI by law enforcement & justice depts, govt depts to detect fraud in welfare/benefit recipients, uses of AI in decision making by health and insurance companies, finance and banking (the EU AI Act will ensure that credit scoring applications are not designed to discriminate groups or individuals by providing an obligation to test the datasets for biases), AI use in Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) & other recruitment tools as well as in education and other use cases which could prove problematic if there is little to no human oversight and regular audits.

8.     Environmental Concerns – Energy & water consumption examples include, liquid coolers.

9.     Regulation(s) – The AI sector is currently like an orchestra without a conductor. However, AI regulations are coming and organisations need to ensure that their AI systems comply with existing laws and standards including:

      a. EU AI Act - GDPR principles and their potential conflicts with AI (data collection and processing practices). (August 2024)

    b. EU Cyber Resilience Act - Aims to safeguard consumers and businesses buying or using products/software with a digital component. (December 2024)

   c.  EU Product Liability Directive (December 2024)

 d. UK Online Safety Act - and its application to Generative AI chatbot tools and platforms (Oct 2023)

Whether in health, education, the workplace & more, AI could be a force for good if built and deployed sensibly with Emotional Intelligent (EQ) led humans in the loop, mitigating AI risks in the future.
