CHOOSE “VALUE” fit over Culture fit.

When leaders struggle to recruit talent, this is often because they are still using outdated recruitment practices and methods which target the same pool of candidates as they did in bygone days.
And then there is recruiting for “Culture fit” .
Having known, worked and/or recruited people from over 70 countries, my advice to recruiting managers is this: with so many organisations now open to the idea of hybrid or in some cases, fully distributed teams, your pool can now be filled with talent from across the world. Move from Culture fit and focus instead, on “VALUE” fit. Value fit means creating a safe space for everyone – not just those who fit a certain criteria. A space for innovation, collaboration, diversity and growth to foster. If culture fit is so great, then perhaps those of us in HR need to ask ourselves why many studies show that in the 'knowledge based' economy, women and people of colour are the ones least likely to favour going back in to the office full-time, post pandemic. According to a recent HBR, Sixty-one percent of U.S. employees say they’ve witnessed or experienced workplace harassment or discrimination based on race, gender, age, and sexuality. Yes, few go on to report this, more likely because they fear repercussions.
So who on earth would wish to return to an environment where conversations or actions which some may find offensive, are then dismissed as banter or “just a joke” by management? This is why I believe, Value over culture will win everyday.
